At Good News Habitat for Humanity, we believe in turning hope into homes—and thanks to our amazing community, that dream is becoming a reality once again!
On December 23, 2024, we received the Sheridan House through the City of Richmond’s Commissioner’s Sale. Since that exciting day, our team, volunteers, and community partners have jumped into action to transform this property into a safe, welcoming home for our 110th Partner Family since 1990!
A House Becomes a Home
Originally a modest two-bedroom, one-bath structure, the Sheridan House didn’t quite match the needs of our next Partner Family, who require three bedrooms and two baths. That’s where Board Member Jim Harvey, President of Harvey Brothers Construction, LLC, stepped in with a vision! Jim reimagined the space and crafted a plan to double the size of the home, adding a third bedroom, second bathroom, and even a one-car garage.
Laying the Foundation—Literally!
We are deeply thankful to the Wayne County Foundation for awarding a generous $15,000 grant to support the new concrete slab and roof trusses—essential components in making our expanded floor plan a reality!
Thanks to the incredible generosity of Panel Barn, who donated the trusses, and Musselwhite Roofing & Construction, who provided all roofing materials and labor at no cost, we were able to stretch this grant even further.
With the Foundation’s permission, we are now able to redirect the grant funds to other critical areas of the home, including the kitchen, bathroom, and flooring—bringing us one step closer to welcoming our Partner Family home.
Window to the Future
We’re thrilled to also share that The Women’s Fund graciously awarded us a $1,500 grant to purchase the eight windows needed for the home. Thanks to their support, we’re letting more natural light into this home and helping make it energy efficient and beautiful!
Volunteer Power in Action
Before any construction could begin, we had to remove the old wall paneling and insulation throughout the house. Enter: 12 amazing volunteers from Wolverine World Wide, plus two dedicated volunteers from the Partner Family! Over two productive days, they stripped the house down and made way for licensed contractors to assess and plan next steps.
A huge thank you to our generous and skilled contractors—Mark Dillon (plumbing), Bobbie Wright (electrical), and Christopher Musselwhite (roofing)—who are donating time and materials where possible to support our mission. And with Jim Harvey leading the charge as head contractor, we’re in expert hands every step of the way!
Clearing the Way
The backyard’s southern fence line was another major challenge—overgrown, tangled with metal fencing and trees. Rinehart’s Lawn Care & Landscaping tackled the task, with help from chainsaw-wielding Jon Blackwell, and two brave volunteers who manned the wood chipper. The next day, Greg Jepson removed all the metal fencing, and Jon returned once more with a mini excavator to clear the stumps. That fence line? Now ready for a fresh start!
A Shoutout to Our Tuesday/Thursday Hero
We can’t talk progress without mentioning Greg Jepson, our weekly volunteer MVP. Whether he’s on-site at the Sheridan house or helping with office tasks, Greg is a constant source of support, humor, and hard work. (We especially love when he and Dan step out for a bit—so we can actually get some work done!)
We’re incredibly proud of all the momentum surrounding our 2025 Partner Family Home. From planning and demolition to donations and dirt work, every bit of effort brings us closer to welcoming another deserving family home.
Thank you to everyone who’s shown up, lent a hand, or contributed resources. You’re building more than walls—you’re building hope.
Stay tuned for more updates, and as always, thank you for being part of the Good News story!
